Originally posted on the official North Bergen PD Facebook page.

The North Bergen Police Department is currently investigating a report of an unknown person taking photographs in the area 48th Street and Aschoff Place. A photograph of the individual has been circulating on social media which claims the person was in possession of a Samurai sword strapped to his back.

A comparison photograph taken by the Detective Bureau, clearly shows the chain link fence has one slat which does not match in the section directly behind the individual. The individual was not armed with a Samurai sword in any witness accounts.

If anyone has any additional information about the individual in the photograph, please contact the Detective Bureau at (201) 392-2092.

North Bergen Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Armed Robbery in Midtown

NJ.COM – A North Bergen man was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for first-degree armed robbery by a judge who said the 26-year-old’s juvenile and adult record showed “an almost perpetual involvement” in the justice system.

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Mark Nelson kept with the sentence that was recommended in Christopher Baez’s plea agreement, despite requests from Baez, his dad and his attorney for leniency.

On March 31, 2015 Baez, armed with a rifle, entered a home on 50th Street in North Bergen with plans to rob it. The homeowner called police and Baez was arrested a couple hours later.

“I can change and I can make progress,” Baez told the judge. “I stand before you asking for leniency.”

North Bergen police officers spotted the car at the QuickChek on Kennedy Boulevard and when they approached Hernandez he became “combative” and ran over one of the officers’ foot with his car, the complaint states.

Hernandez then fled the scene and returned to his 57th Street home. He got out of his car, pointed the gun at two North Bergen police officers and “fired several rounds with the intent to kill them,” according to the reports.

As only Hudson County View reported, Bergen County Superior Court Judge Margaret Foti ruled back in September that Grossi was not competent to stand trial due to an undisclosed medical condition.

Grossi was scheduled to have a hearing on January 9 to decide if his medical condition has improved enough for him to stand trial, but that date was moved to January 30, according to state AG’s office spokesman Pete Aseltine.

The former township official is accused of working political campaigns and performing personal chores while on township time. He was indicted on the charges back on December 17, 2012.

Fundraising Goal Exceeded, Home Found for "Sparky" the North Bergen Cat that was Shot with an Arrow.

Sparky, the cat that was found with an arrow through his body, has now found a permanent home in Champaign, Illinois where he will be enjoying his new life as an indoor cat, in about one week.

The GoFundMe campaign raised $2560 after Maria Musing- a blogger, posted the unfortunate news of the cat’s injury on her website.

“Sparky’s drains came out today and he is doing wonderful! He has been neutered. He has received all of his vaccinations. He has tested negative for FeLV/FIV. He will be hospitalized for a few more days,” says Maria. “We wish to thank everyone who contributed to Sparky’s care, and for helping to get him into a new home.”

Any funds left over will be donated to Animal Life Savers, located in Palisades Park, New Jersey.

Repost: North Bergen cat survives arrow lodged through body, GoFundMe started for medical needs

On Thursday morning Kelly Shannon went out to feed a few friendly neighborhood feral cats, just like she always does before work every day. Imagine her horror and surprise when she found one of her favorites, a sweet, gentle male named Sparky, wounded with an arrow.

In fact, the arrow was still protruding from his body, and it was evident that the person who shot Sparky did so while he was facing the shooter. The arrow struck him in the left shoulder area, and the tip exited his left flank, leaving the shaft embedded in his body.
Enlisting the aid of a kind neighbor, Kelly was able to get him in a travel crate and immediately took him to her veterinarian. She remarked to me on the phone this morning while I was gathering facts for this blog, that he remained sweet, gentle, easy to handle and trusting, despite being scared and in pain.
Sparky is currently in the care of The Animal Clinic of Bayonne and we are pleased to report that the arrow did not pierce vital organs and right now his prognosis is fair. Sparky will also be neutered, given all of his vaccinations, and tested for FeLV/FIV while he is recovering from his wounds. Kelly would love to get this sweet boy a home. He deserves to have a loving, forever home after this ordeal.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for Sparky’s care, and updates will be posted on the fundraiser, along with bills, so everyone can follow his treatment and recovery. GoFundMe donations will be directed to Kelly’s paypal. All funds will be accounted for in a quick and transparent manner. If Sparky’s financial needs are completely met before reaching “goal” – the fundraiser will be stopped. All funds will be for Sparky’s veterinary care (surgical recovery and standard treatment, including labs, medications and imaging, neutering, vaccinations, diagnostic testing) and efforts to find him a good home.

GoFundMe – Help for Sparky – shot by arrow!
If you would like to help with Sparky’s veterinary care directly, you may contact the clinic to make a payment over the phone, or send a payment by mail. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE CLINIC FOR UPDATES! They have agreed to take calls for payments and are aware that Sparky’s story is on social media. Updates will be routinely posted on Kelly’s profile, this blog, and Sparky’s fundraiser. Help is appreciated, but keep in mind this is an animal hospital and a place of business. We don’t wish to cause any disruption to their daily routine.

North Bergen PD celebrates the 27th anniversary of the department's first female Officer

27 years ago today the North Bergen Police Department hired our first female Police Officer in department history. Bernadette Paul-Gonyou was sworn as a North Bergen Police Officer and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before her retirement. Lt. Paul-Gonyou became the first female Sergeant and Lieutenant in department history as well.

Lt. Paul-Gonyou paved the way for many NBPD females who came after her. Two other females, Christine Dall-Klag and Cynthia Montero have also reached the rank of Lieutenant since. The NBPD currently has (15) female Officers in the rank and file which equates to (12.5%) of our force. We aim to increase that number during every recruiting period.
