Reports: Bicyclist struck by vehicle on Tonnelle Ave

Editors Note: In an earlier edit of this article it was reported that the man died as a result of the accident. Upon getting more information.He was then transported to the Jersey City Medical Center and was initially listed in critical condition, but has since regained consciousness and has been stabilized. He still remains at the Jersey City Medical Center for observation, authorities said.

Reports indicate that a man was struck by a vehicle last night in midtown North Bergen on Tonnelle Ave. Witnesses say that a man was riding his bicycle along Tonnelle Ave near New Durham Church. The Hudson County crash investigation unit was on scene. No further information is available at the moment.

North Bergen teenager shot and killed in Queens, NY

According to reports by Pix 11, 18-year-old man, identified as Albert Schaper, of North Bergen, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead, according to police.

Police received a call for multiple people shot around 9:30 p.m., in the vicinity of Jamaica Avenue and Van Wyck Expressway. When they arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

North Bergen police welcome new officers

“I would like to congratulate the new officers and thank them for their selfless attitude and their commitment to protect the residents of North Bergen,” praised Mayor Nicholas Sacco.

Today the North Bergen Police Department welcomed six new officers to the force.

Emily Ramirez, Vanessa Espinoza, Biron Mendoza, George Somarriba, Salvatore Giuca, and Bryan Suarez were swore in today at 12:30 PM.

“Today we welcomed six new officers to the North Bergen Police Department, these officers are tasked with the protection of the people of North Bergen and are a [sic] now part of an excellent department with great leadership to guide them. Congratulations to all the new officers,” says Commissioner Allen Pascual, who is head of public safety.

Applicants may be required to pass a drug screening and will undergo an extensive background investigation prior to any offers of employment.

All applicants must be a resident of the State of New Jersey and possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license during

the term of their appointment.

Essential Duties:

The Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II (SLEO Class II) is a part time member of the Police Department. The SLEO Class II may be assigned for not more than twenty four (24) hours per week to provide public safety and law enforcement services to the North Bergen Municipal Court ONLY.

Multiple sources on Facebook have indicated that man is threatening to jump off the Galaxy Tower in Guttenberg. Stay posted for updates.

Update Aug, 18th 3:16 PM: The unknown man has been apprehended by the police.

“I was on scene today of a person threatening to jump off 50th floor of Galaxy building. Great job by Undersheriff Conti talking the guy down,” says North Bergen Chief of Police Robert Dowd.

12 years for helping dump Newark man's body behind North Bergen gas station

A 25-year-old woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison for her role in the 2012 murder of a Newark man who was dumped behind a North Bergen gas station, officials said.

On Dec. 31, a passerby found Williams’ body behind the Getty gas station on Tonnele Avenue, partially clothed and with his hands bound behind his back. His death was ruled a homicide and six people were charged in connection with his death.

North Bergen police union remembers Patrolman Joseph A. Peters

The North Bergen police union PBA posted a Facebook status in remembrance of Patrolman Joseph A. Peters. The status reads, “Today we remember our brother Patrolman Joseph A. Peters who died 35 years ago on July 7th, 1981 due to carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of a defective patrol car. May he continue to Rest In Peace.”

Patrolman Peters died from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of a defective patrol car on Tuesday, July 7, 1981. Patrolman Peters was staking out an illegal dump site and, when he failed to report in, other officers found his body in the patrol car.

Another officer who was using the patrol car several days earlier was in the hospital as a result of carbon monoxide after being exposed to it as well. Although the officer was hospitalized the car was never ordered to be serviced and was reassigned to Patrolman Peters.

North Bergen Police Chief Dowd, Deputy Chief Fasilis, invited to the White House

North Bergen Police Chief Robert Dowd & Deputy Chief Peter Fasilis were invited to the White House to meet with the members of the President’s senior staff to discuss aspects of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

“The number one priority of the North Bergen Police Department is to foster a collective efficacy in our neighborhoods for the purpose of promoting the safety and stability of our community. We are committed to utilizing the latest technology, coupled with a philosophy of community policing, in an effort to provide the most efficient, effective and professional delivery of police services,” writes Chief Dowd.

On December 18, 2014, President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order establishing the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Task Force Members sought expertise from stakeholders and input from the public through Listening Sessions, teleconferences and written comments as they worked to identify best practices and make recommendations to the President.

The Task Force recommendations provide solutions to help law enforcement agencies and communities strengthen trust and collaboration, while ushering the nation into the next phase of community-focused policing.
