Former North Bergen Coach, Jackie Moore, passes away

Former Bruins offensive line coach under Legendary Coach Ascolese, John “Jackie” Moore, has passed away after battling with cancer.

John “Jackie” Moore was an influential high school football coach at Don Bosco, Marist, North Bergen, and Wallington.

Many Bruins remember Coach Moore for his key phrases such as “buzz ‘em!” when directing the team to start an exercise. “Ok – now what you’re going to do is take your right hand and place it over your right pectoral muscle!”

“I’ll never forget his many punch lines and the lesson he taught me about football and most importantly, life,” says former Bruins lineman Alex Nunez.

Many former Bruins took to social media to express their gratitude and memories of Coach Moore.

“I know you’ll have your famous pencil in your sock up top! Rest in peace coach!” writes former linemen and current North Bergen PeeWee Coach Julian Torres.

The funeral will be held at Costa Memorial Home, Boulevard and Central Ave. Hasbrouck Heights, on Monday at 8:45 a.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Church, 114 Mt. Vernon St., Ridgefield Park at 10 a.m. Interment following at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 7 p.m.

North Bergen's Ed Duran inducted into the Hudson County Hall of Fame

Edward Duran who played quarterback during the school state championship run in 1984 was inducted into the Hudson County Hall of Fame.

The Hudson County Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1991 by the Hudson County Division of Parks, with the support of the Office of the County Executive and the Board of Chosen Freeholders, to commemorate the many Hudson County athletes, boosters, coaches, and journalists who have left their mark in the professional and scholastic worlds of sport.

Duran played under the late Vincent Ascolese and went on to play linebacker for Boston College.

New coach brings North Bergen "Alumni Day" for former football players

“We’re forming an alumni association,” Guasconi said. “Guys like Wayne Zitt, Ira Wolfe and Ed Bartulovich are taking the bull by the horns.”

“I want to explain to them how important it is to play football for North Bergen,” Guasconi said. “The tradition is here. You have to cherish the moments you have…”

There will be an honoring of the past players. The pre-game tailgate BBQ begins at 11am and the game will start at 2pm.

The North Bergen Bruins will be facing the Bloomfield Bengals at Ascolese Stadium.

North Bergen Freeholder & Commissioner roll up their sleeves for Bruin Pride

After a meme was posted about the “lucky” rock outside the Bruin stadium locker room – some had concerns over the condition of the local landmark. Jamar Wilkins, former Bruins assistant coach under the lengedary Coach Ascolese, commented “remove the weeds growing and it need a fresh coat of paint,” and Ted Weitecha of the NB park department wrote, “[It] needs to be painted!”

It wasn’t longer than a few hours after the comments were posted before Freeholder Anthony Vainieri and township commissioner Hugo Cabrera personally visited the rock. “People complain then let’s solve the complaint,” says Freeholder Vainieri.

“I’m pulling them myself,” exclaimed Mr. Vainieri, referring to the weeds around the rock before pulling them out himself.

The rock has been freshly painted and cleaned up just in time for the new football season.

This is not the first occurrence where the local politician responded to social media concerns. After Vainieri revealed his plans to restore Hudson County park last week- some had misunderstandings on the funding. The freeholder was happy to tell HudPost about the details of the plan and ensured that no foul play was occurring.

Former Bruin and NFL player, Evan Rodriguez, hosting free youth camp for North Bergen children

Evan Rodriguez, the former standout quarterback and safety Bruin and NFL player, is hosting a free youth football camp.

On his official Facebook page reads, “It’s almost football time again and that means another chance to enjoy a fun and free football camp with E-Rod and his NFL friends! It’ll be held on the field named to honor his legendary HS football coach, the late Vinny Ascolese, the same field where E-Rod starred as a Bruin from 2003-06.”

The camp will be held on Saturday, July 2nd, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The camp is open to all children ages 6-17 at Vincent Ascolese Field in James J. Braddock park.

The camp is sponsored by USA Football which works with more than 150 current and former NFL Players to deliver football camps for youth and high school athletes.

Rodriguez clinic introduces children to football by teaching basic skills in a fun and energetic environment. Certified clinicians use a series of drills to show passing, catching and running skills in a non-contact setting.

All skills and drills selected are based on USA Football’s Player Progression Development Model, ensuring children are learning in an age-appropriate manner and creating an ideal atmosphere.
