Uber ask North Bergen residents to call Senator Sacco

Uber is a transportation network company that operates a mobile app which allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request which is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars.

On June 28th the company sent an e-mail to its customers urging them to contact Senator Sacco in support of Senate bill (S-2179) also known as the “Transportation Network Company Safety and Regulatory Act.”

Uber writes, “Right now, the New Jersey Senate is considering a bill that would allow Uber to stay in New Jersey for the long term—and the Senate needs to hear from riders like you! Other legislation being considered in the legislature would potentially force Uber out of the Garden State, which is why we need your support for the Senate bill.”

The senate bill includes language to identify ride-sharing apps as “”Transportation network company” which means a corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship, or other entity that is registered as a business in the State or operates in this State, and uses a digital network to connect a transportation network company rider to a transportation network company driver to provide a prearranged ride. A transportation network company shall not be deemed to control, direct, or manage a transportation network company driver or the driver’s personal vehicle that connects to the company’s digital network, except where agreed to by written contract.”

The bill also includes insurance standards for Uber drivers, annual permits priced at $5,000 annually, zero-torrence drug & alcohol policies, amongst other regulations.

Clinton in North Bergen

Chelsea Clinton is scheduled to visit the Renaissance Building , 6201 Grand Ave. North Bergen, at 11:30am on Monday to campaign for her mother, Hillary Clinton, a democratic presidential primary candidate.

“We’re going to talk about my mom’s plans to make families stronger in New Jersey and across the country. She’s going to break the barriers holding back our neglected communities — she’ll do the hard but important work of making sure race, gender, and class don’t limit anyone’s potential.” says Chelsea Clinton.

This is not the first time a Clinton has visited North Bergen. During the 2008 democratic presidential primary against Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton campaigned at the famous Schuetzen Park with support from local representatives such as Congressman Albio Sires.

On Tuesday, June 7th, North Bergen democrats will have the opportunity to cast their ballot for either Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Unaffiliated voters in New Jersey will be able to vote in the democratic primary simply by declaring their affiliation with the Democratic Party at the polls on Election Day.

Republicans will also have the opportunity to cast their ballot, although businessman and reality TV show star, Donald Trump, has secured enough delegates to clinch the GOP nomination.

Hudson County Freeholders keep lights off for US Veterans

North Bergen Braddock Park Flag

In an opinion article released by HudPost on April 27, ‘Let’s properly honor our Vets’, it was reported that the recently-dedicated Veteran’s Park section of Braddock park is flying the United States flag without a nighttime light.

According to the federal code on the proper display of the United States flag, Old Glory “may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated.”

Title 4 United States Code:

§ 6. Time and Occasions for Display. (a) It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

Shortly after the Op-Ed was released a person by the Facebook name Jazz Awad, claimed to work for Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, released this statement from Freeholder’s office.

“There are 3 American flags in the park which all have upright lights on them. To our knowledge they are all working. I will look tonight and see for myself. Freeholder Anthony Vainieri.”

The following night, Tom Schoenewald, the writer of the opinion piece, posted another photo of the flag being displayed in the nighttime without illumination.

“Someone should have made it a point to take that American flag down sometime before this evening. Fixing the lights might be a bigger issue, but it’s not difficult to lower a flag out of respect to our Veterans,” says Schoenewald.

HudPost was able to get in contact with the secretary of the freeholder’s office who was not aware of the situation and said she would bring it to Vainieri’s attention right away. HudPost also contacted the North Bergen Parks and Recreation department who said they would bring up the issue with the county.

Opinion: Let's properly honor our Vets

North Bergen Braddock Park

I applaud the town of North Bergen and it’s Public Works Department for all of the fantastic improvements to, and daily upkeep of, the James J. Braddock Park over the past year. However, there must be immediate attention paid to the recently-dedicated Veteran’s Park section at 90th Street and Bergenline Avenue.

On my last two visits to the park (over the last week) for night-time exercise, the lights at the Veteran’s Memorial have all been off. While I understand electrical malfunctions can happen at any time, what is inexcusable is allowing our American flag to fly in complete darkness. Old Glory is what our brave Military men and women have fought to defend for centuries and never should it be allowed to fly without a nighttime light shining brightly on the majestic Stars and Stripes.

What makes this situation more disappointing is the fact that on both of my recent visits, there have been four fully-lit playing fields with nary a player on any of them. Those three baseball fields and one football field are inside Braddock Park and either adjacent, or close-by, the Veteran’s Park.

Let’s properly honor our Vets with either a brightly lit American flag every night, or, the proper removal of the same flag at dusk until the lights are fixed.

Town tightening outdoor cafe regulations

North Bergen

The Mayor and North Bergen commissioners passed an ordinance that will make it unlawful to operate an outdoor cafe without holding a valid license from the Township Administrator.
