The North Bergen Motor Vehicle Commission will reopen on Jan. 29 following renovations, according to state officials.
The local agency closed Dec. 9, and general construction began Dec. 10, according to Mairin Bellack, the spokeswoman for the state Motor Vehicle Commission, formerly known as the DMV.

A warrant has been issued for Juan Perez, 58, of Hillcrest Avenue in North Bergen, who faces 68 counts of animal cruelty after authorities found dozens of cats and dogs living in unspeakable conditions, according to North Bergen Police Chief Robert Dowd.
“It was more neglect than any kind of abuse,” explained Animal Control Officer Vincent Ascolese. “But it’s a delicate line. If the animals aren’t taken care of, it’s considered abuse.”

A judge Friday shot down a bid by the state Attorney General’s Office to close a hearing in which a former North Bergen official accused of misconduct in office is seeking access to confidential records of a key investigator in the state’s case against him.
Superior Court Judge Margaret M. Foti rejected the state’s request to seal the record and close the proceedings in which Timothy J. Grossi, 76, of Jersey City, is trying to obtain internal affairs documents relating to a state investigator who is expected to be a witness at Grossi’s upcoming trial in April, said defense attorney Jeffrey G. Garrigan.
