Hometown heroes save drowning man in James J. Braddock park

Two men, Robert Castello of North Bergen and Steven Ramos of Guttenberg, are being called heroes for their keen eye and quick response. According to reports, an unknown man fell into the pond in James J. Braddock park early yesterday afternoon.

“[Castello] caught a fish and he asked me to take his picture holding the fish. He saw the guy fall in the water but like at first we wasn’t sure if he fell or if he jumped in but he wasn’t coming back up so we walked over and I saw him there not moving,” says Steven Ramos.

Both men grabbed the unknown man out of the water, checked his pulse and kept him on his side. “He was bleeding from his mouth and cheek. I think he hit his head when he fell in the water,” Ramos describes the incident.

“Realizing the individual was drowning, Steve [Ramos] and I ran to his rescue as a team effort and phoned 911 following all directions from the 911 operator to save the mans life,” Castello, who works for the North Bergen MUA and will be running for Committeeman for Ward 1, District 2 in June, tells HudPost.

Paramedics arrived and transported the gentleman to the hospital.

“I am glad I was fishing at the right place at the right time,” a relieved Castello says.

North Bergen Hudson Tunnel Project

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and NJ TRANSIT are jointly preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate the Hudson Tunnel Project. The Project is intended to preserve the current functionality of the Northeast Corridor’s (NEC) Hudson River rail crossing between New Jersey and New York and strengthen the resilience of the NEC.

The FRA and NJ TRANSIT invite you to learn about the proposed Project and the environmental review process. The public scoping meetings, to be held in New Jersey and New York City, offer you an opportunity to provide comments on the scope of the EIS, including the purpose and need, proposed Project and alternatives to be considered, potential environmental impacts of concern and methodologies to be used in the evaluation, the approach for public and agency involvement, and any particular concerns related to the anticipated impacts of the Project.

The public scoping meeting will be held on May 19, 2016 at Union City High School on 2500 Kenned Boulevard Union City, New Jersey.

The meeting will be an afternoon session from 3 to 5 PM with a brief presentation about the Project at 4 PM, and an evening session from 6 to 8 PM with a brief presentation about the Project at 7 PM. The public will be able to review Project information, talk informally with members of the study staff, and formally submit comments to the FRA (to a stenographer or in writing).

Construction of the new Hudson Tunnel is expected to take approximately seven years after obtaining the environmental approvals, permits and real estate, and subject to availability of a steady stream of funding. A preliminary schedule aims to complete the new tunnel by the end of 2025

North Bergen veteran launches fitness business

North Bergen High alumni and United States Air Force Veteran, Grovert Fuentes, has announced the launch of “The Fit Lifestyle box,” a subscription business.

The Fit Lifestyle Box will offer a monthly door service subscription for $20 which will include a full-size product aside from samples and protein bars, cookies, and chips.

“I’ve been working for several months on a subscription business in the fitness industry. I will admit, I’m not the first one, but as a customer of a few, I wasn’t satisfied.” says owner Grovert Fuentes.

“If I wanted a full size product in the box, I had to spend over $30 monthly and when I did, I got a cheap see-through shirt. If I spent $15, I only got samples and that is all. I felt like I got robbed. I decided this was my call-to-action.”

By partnering with over 150 companies, Fit Lifestyle Box, is able to reduce the cost of a subscription box to roughly the price of a gym membership. The company personalizes each box according to the subscriber’s need. Subscribers can expect to find a full-size fitness product, at least one protein bar and several sample size goodies. These products may be items such as apparel, jump ropes, stretch bands, etc. Also, you will receive workout routines, recipes, fitness tips, and the following month’s discount code to the online store.

The company promises to provide the best items with a volume discount, pack them up according to your goal, and ship them to your doorstep.

What does North Bergen High School's Bronze ranking indicate?

North Bergen High School, Union City High School, and West New York’s Memorial High School all share something in common. They have all been awarded the national ranking of “Bronze” by USNews.com

“It was great to see North Bergen High School continue to be recognized for its Bronze Medal Award from U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s best high schools…” says North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco.

According to USNews.com, the third level – bronze distinction – includes schools that met state test performance and graduation rate criteria, but have not yet demonstrated high levels of measurable college readiness.

A bronze medal high school does not meet all the requirements of performance on college-level Advanced Placement exams or International Baccalaureate exams.

These schools have demonstrated commendable performance on their state tests and graduation rates, but did not perform well enough on the College Readiness Index to merit identification as a top-performing gold or silver medal high school. Either they have not provided as much access or any access to college-level AP or IB course work as their top-performing peers, or they offer an alternative program to AP or IB.

While AP and IB are the two most well-known programs in the country, there are schools that focus on providing students with access to alternative college-level programs, typically in the form of dual enrollment at local community colleges.
