North Bergen Police Chief Dowd, Deputy Chief Fasilis, invited to the White House

North Bergen Police Chief Robert Dowd & Deputy Chief Peter Fasilis were invited to the White House to meet with the members of the President’s senior staff to discuss aspects of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.

“The number one priority of the North Bergen Police Department is to foster a collective efficacy in our neighborhoods for the purpose of promoting the safety and stability of our community. We are committed to utilizing the latest technology, coupled with a philosophy of community policing, in an effort to provide the most efficient, effective and professional delivery of police services,” writes Chief Dowd.

On December 18, 2014, President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order establishing the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Task Force Members sought expertise from stakeholders and input from the public through Listening Sessions, teleconferences and written comments as they worked to identify best practices and make recommendations to the President.

The Task Force recommendations provide solutions to help law enforcement agencies and communities strengthen trust and collaboration, while ushering the nation into the next phase of community-focused policing.

Uber ask North Bergen residents to call Senator Sacco

Uber is a transportation network company that operates a mobile app which allows consumers with smartphones to submit a trip request which is then routed to Uber drivers who use their own cars.

On June 28th the company sent an e-mail to its customers urging them to contact Senator Sacco in support of Senate bill (S-2179) also known as the “Transportation Network Company Safety and Regulatory Act.”

Uber writes, “Right now, the New Jersey Senate is considering a bill that would allow Uber to stay in New Jersey for the long term—and the Senate needs to hear from riders like you! Other legislation being considered in the legislature would potentially force Uber out of the Garden State, which is why we need your support for the Senate bill.”

The senate bill includes language to identify ride-sharing apps as “”Transportation network company” which means a corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship, or other entity that is registered as a business in the State or operates in this State, and uses a digital network to connect a transportation network company rider to a transportation network company driver to provide a prearranged ride. A transportation network company shall not be deemed to control, direct, or manage a transportation network company driver or the driver’s personal vehicle that connects to the company’s digital network, except where agreed to by written contract.”

The bill also includes insurance standards for Uber drivers, annual permits priced at $5,000 annually, zero-torrence drug & alcohol policies, amongst other regulations.
