E-Rod to Host 5th Annual Youth Football Clinic, Cheerleading Added to Program

Evan Rodriguez, the former standout quarterback and safety Bruin and NFL player, is hosting a free youth football camp.

On his official Facebook page reads, “Come out & join us on May 18th for my 5th annual free youth football camp in my home town of North Bergen. This year we will also have cheerleading coaches so young Queens can participate too.”

Let’s all come together and bless these kids with a great day of fun. I would like to Thank Mayor Sacco for letting us continue to make a difference in the community.”

The camp will be held on May 18th, 2019 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The camp is open to all children ages 6-17 at Vincent Ascolese Field in James J. Braddock park.

The camp is sponsored by USA Football which works with more than 150 current and former NFL Players to deliver football camps for youth and high school athletes.

Rodriguez clinic introduces children to football by teaching basic skills in a fun and energetic environment. Certified clinicians use a series of drills to show passing, catching and running skills in a non-contact setting.

All skills and drills selected are based on USA Football’s Player Progression Development Model, ensuring children are learning in an age-appropriate manner and creating an ideal atmosphere.

NPBD & HCCC Raise Funds for Special Olympics at Charity Basketball Game

The North Bergen Police Department faced off against Hudson County Community College on Thursday, Apr. 25, 2019 as the two teams took to the basketball court to raise funds for the New Jersey Special Olympics.

The dramatic match-up in the North Bergen Recreation Center gym pitched members of the PD against HCCC faculty and students in Professor Richard Walker’s criminal justice class, with close scores throughout the game, culminating in the students pulling ahead for a 69 to 65 win.

About $800 was raised for the charity thanks to the generous efforts of the department and the school.

North Bergen’s Amanda Pace wins first ever NJSIAA Girls Wrestling Tournament

Sunday, February 17, 2019, was a historic day for NJ High School Athletics. This was the first year of the NJSIAA Girls Wrestling Regional Tournament.

Female wrestlers from New Jersey High Schools throughout the state competed in this event. This was a special day for NJ female athletes including those from North Bergen HS.

Emelin Aguilar, Sujeydy Gonzalez and Amanda Pace are the first-ever to compete in the NJSIAA Girls Wrestling Tournament.

Special recognition and congratulations to Amanda Pace, who won the tournament and captured the gold medal. Amanda is North Bergen’s first girl’s regional wrestling champion. She will travel to Atlantic City where she will represent NBHS in her quest to capture a championship.

Kyle Anderson’s CELEBRATE LIFE DAY is an all-day basketball event featuring a skills clinic, tournaments, a
sneaker drive, and school supply giveaway. CELEBRATE LIFE DAY’s mission is to have Kyle’s vision of an all day
basketball event for all ages to come together to simply “CELEBRATE LIFE” through friendship, love for each other,
and basketball. CELEBRATE LIFE DAY has partnered with North Bergen Police Department’s Community Policing
Team to assist in the clinic, offer activities for kids, interact with families from the area and be a positive presence for
our community. North Bergen Police Department will play the Hudson County Sheriff’s department in a basketball
game to tip- off the evening events with Kyle playing for the North Bergen Police Department.

Erika’s Lighthouse has programs to educate schools communities about teen depression, eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and empowers teens to take control of their mental health. Celebrate Life Day will also raise funds for local high school student- athletes attending college in 2018. Scholarship candidates are students-athletes who have a proven record of community service, excelling in the classroom and in athletics.

The day kicks off with a basketball clinic for boys and girls 8-15 year-olds from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., followed by a
boys high school hoops tournament featuring Northern New Jersey teams beginning at 1:15 p.m. The men’s
tournament begins at approximately 3:45 p.m. Each team is guaranteed three games and will be divided into two
pools, with the winner of each pool playing in the championship game. The day concludes with the high school and
men’s championship games at 6:30.

Local DJ, Robin Castro will be playing music throughout the day and DJ Ted Smooth will be the master of ceremonies for the championship games. Local food vendors will be serving food throughout the daylong event.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a pair of used sneakers that will be cleaned and donated to the needy. Additionally, there will be a school supply giveaway for a limited amount for school-age children.

The North Bergen Police Department’s Community Policing Unit is a proud partner of the event, with officers participating throughout the day. Adidas will be providing jerseys for teams and t-shirts for the clinic and Gatorade will be providing sports beverages throughout the events.

Students return to school as Champions!

When the student-athletes of the North Bergen Giants walk into school today they will hold their heads high having won the Super Bowl over Clifton.

“Great job by these boys on their 11-0 undefeated season,” says Diana Mompellier, the team rep.

According to Assistant Head Coach, Julian Torres, the Giants scored over 350 points and only let up 66 points in the 11 game season.

After the game was over – North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco had a few words for the team. “Your coaches did a great job with you and you all played fantastic!” said the Mayor before the team huddled around the trophy to the sound of bull horns.

New coach brings North Bergen “Alumni Day” for former football players

“We’re forming an alumni association,” Guasconi said. “Guys like Wayne Zitt, Ira Wolfe and Ed Bartulovich are taking the bull by the horns.”

“I want to explain to them how important it is to play football for North Bergen,” Guasconi said. “The tradition is here. You have to cherish the moments you have…”

There will be an honoring of the past players. The pre-game tailgate BBQ begins at 11am and the game will start at 2pm.

The North Bergen Bruins will be facing the Bloomfield Bengals at Ascolese Stadium.
