Local diners have a great new option for exotic cuisine, with the Ethiopian restaurant Ghenet (meaning “heaven”) now open at 7312 Broadway. Mayor Nicholas Sacco joined the ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 6 along with County Executive Thomas DeGise, Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, Commissioner Julio Marenco, and a crowd of supporters and neighbors.
“Where angels eat,” is the motto of the restaurant, which serves a wide variety of traditional Ethiopian dishes, both with meat and from an extensive vegetarian selection. Owner Yeworkwoha Ephrem, 72, emigrated to the U.S. during the Ethiopian civil war of 1974. She worked for many years at the United Nations before retiring and opening her first Ghenet Restaurant in Manhattan in 1998, moving it to Brooklyn 10 years later.

A 20-year resident of North Bergen, Ephrem is bringing Ghenet to her hometown. Purchasing a former hardware story in 2016, she remodeled it into an inviting eatery and installed a kitchen downstairs to prepare healthy, affordable cuisine.
Ethiopian food, she explains, is notable for its unique spices and cooking methods. “Once you taste it,” she says, “you’ll crave it.”

Evan Rodriguez, the former standout quarterback and safety Bruin and NFL player, is hosting a free youth football camp.
“It’s almost football time again and that means another chance to enjoy a fun and free football camp,” says Rodriguez.
The camp will be held on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The camp is open to all children ages 6-17 at Vincent Ascolese Field in James J. Braddock park.

The camp is sponsored by USA Football which works with more than 150 current and former NFL Players to deliver football camps for youth and high school athletes.
Rodriguez clinic introduces children to football by teaching basic skills in a fun and energetic environment. Certified clinicians use a series of drills to show passing, catching and running skills in a non-contact setting.
All skills and drills selected are based on USA Football’s Player Progression Development Model, ensuring children are learning in an age-appropriate manner and creating an ideal atmosphere.

Residents with damaged or unserviceable American flags that they would like to retire can contribute them for disposal at the 78th annual Flag Day ceremony scheduled for Thursday, June 14. Retired flags will be disposed of in the traditional manner, by burning.
Flags can be brought during business hours to the DPW at 6100 Tonnelle Ave. in North Bergen or the Recreation Center at 6300 Meadowview Ave. They are also being collected at the Guttenberg DPW at 217 71st St. and at Guttenberg Town Hall at 6808 Park Ave.
The annual Flag Day festivities begin with a parade at 7 p.m. on June 14. The parade starts at 85th Street and Bergenline Avenue in North Bergen and proceeds down Bergenline to Miller Stadium at 58th Street in West New York. Leading the parade will be Mayor Nicholas Sacco and many other local officials.
Numerous high school marching bands will participate in the parade, along with vehicles and representatives from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, the North Bergen Police Department motorcycle squad, and others.
The parade will be followed by a presentation at Miller Stadium and the ceremonial burning of retired U.S. flags. This event is sponsored by the American Legion and the Joint Veteran’s Affairs Committee of West New York, with cooperation of the townships of North Bergen, Guttenberg, and West New York.

Based on the runaway success of the first Braddock Park Flea Market & Collectible Show in May, the market will become a regular event on the first Saturday of every month, beginning on June 2, 2018.
Crowds of visitors flocked to the first flea market and walked away with collectibles, trinkets, and household items for as low at $1 each. Expect an even bigger and better market when it returns from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 on 91st off of Bergenline Avenue in the park.
More than 50 exhibitors will display quality merchandise such as handbags, crafts, sports collectibles, clothing, jewelry, gift items, perfumes, dollar items, antiques & collectibles, garage/tag sale items and much more.
Food will be available at the event. Admission is free to the public.
16-year-old Yousef Idrissi of North Bergen will be running a summer program on how to build and program robots this summer.

North Bergen’s Department of Public Works is in the process of refurbishing the red brick surface of 75th Street between Park Avenue and Boulevard East. The road had deteriorated over the years, resulting in deep troughs and potholes.
A team of DPW workers is currently working to completely overhaul the street, brick by brick. The original bricks are removed, the underlying surface repaired, flattened, and the cleaned bricks replaced.
The bricks are said to be over 100 years old.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Freeholder Anthony Vainieri stopped by recently to visit the workers engaged in the project, praising their results of their labor.

“Thanks to the DPW for conducting this labor-intensive renovation, refurbishing the street literally brick by brick,” says Mayor Sacco. “The red brick roadway is progressing, and it looks terrific!”

Mayor of West New York, Dr. Felix Roque, became Larry Wainstein’s first major endorsement going into the 2019 North Bergen commissioners election, our friends at Hudson County View first reported.
“I am seeing what is happening in North Bergen and I have to tell you the truth: I am not happy,” Dr. Roque told a crowd of supporters. “The machine keeps going and going and the reality is that they are not doing what they should for the well being of the residents, but Larry is fighting for your well being. That is why I am here.”
Dr. Roque has a history of endorsing candidates who have not aligned themselves with the Hudson County Democratic establishment. In 2012, Roque endorsed Republican Joe Kyrillos over the democratic incumbent Bob Menendez for the United States Senate seat before changing his mind after some backlash. That same year, Mayor Roque actively supported a column of candidates during the democratic primary which included drug reform supporter, Michael Shurin, who was up against democratic incumbent US Congressmen Albio Sires.
“We applaud Mayor Roque and the rest of the elected officials that are currently fighting to make sure that all the people are represented in our communities,” says Larry Wainstein. “Corruption continues to plague the North Bergen Housing Authority. [Mayor Sacco’s] stepson is still awaiting trial for a no-show job that defrauded taxpayers, I’d be surprised if Sacco makes it to next May without being carted away in handcuffs first.”
Mayor Sacco’s camp wasted no time responding to the endorsement.
“It’s puzzling to see Mayor Roque endorse someone like Larry Wainstein who doesn’t even live in North Bergen and has been absolutely demolished and embarrassed in every single election he’s ever participated in.”
Needless to say, this is a small taste of what 2019 will be. Imagine what a Wainstein endorsement from Union City mayor Brian Stack would bring to North Bergen politics.
